How this started

It started with one question.

I moved to Richfield over three years ago, and recently realized how few women in my own community I had gotten to know. When you work from home, work independently, spend time within the same circle of friends, or just live inside the same routines, it can be surprisingly hard to meet new people naturally.

It was never my plan to start a walking group. I've been part of a hiking group and joined friends for walks before, but I'm usually the one who needs a little outside motivation to get away from my home office and spend more time outdoors. This time I just wanted to meet more women nearby and give myself the excuse, and the accountability, to get outside more before winter arrives. So I asked in the Richfield community group on Facebook if any women wanted to go for a walk. I woke up to 80+ women saying yes.

That made it pretty clear I wasn't the only one, and I decided to do something about it. Know Her MN is my way of making it easier for us to get to know the women around us. Not just meeting more women, but actually getting to know each other and building a stronger community in the process.

If it's your first time

How walks work.

45–60 minutes, easy pace

Casual and conversational. Come for part of it, stay for all of it, or keep walking after.

We wait about 5 minutes

I'm at the meeting spot a few minutes early to welcome everyone, and we start walking about 5 minutes after start time.

Exact meeting spot and parking

Each walk on our calendar lists where to meet and where to park, so you're not wandering around looking for us.

Different days and times

Mornings, lunch breaks, after work, Saturdays. We rotate so women with different schedules can join.

RSVP so we can reach you

RSVP on our calendar for each walk you plan to join. You'll get a reminder, plus a heads-up if plans or the weather change. If your plans change, please update your RSVP.

Know Her Walks

Our first month.

Eight brave women came to our first walk at Richfield Lake Park. Two days later, 15 of us walked all the way around Wood Lake. And on Saturday morning, nine of us started at the Veterans Park bandshell. Turns out walking with strangers gets less strange pretty quickly.

Our favorite parks around Richfield

Richfield Lake Park

A loop around the lake that's easy to walk once or twice. Each lap is about 0.9 miles.

Wood Lake Nature Center

Nature trails with plenty of wildlife to stop for along the way. About 1.8 miles.

Veterans Park

Easy paths around the park, starting at the bandshell. About 1.5 miles.

Coming up

Walking is just the start.

Walks are still at the heart of what we do, and now we're adding more ways to connect: coffee mornings, conversations at The Table, and more based on what you tell us you'd enjoy.

  • Coffee & ConnectionMorning coffee at a local café. No fee to join, and each of us orders our own.
  • The TableSmall-group gatherings built around real conversation, sometimes over dinner.
  • Shaped by youHave an idea? Tell us what you'd like to do next in the form below.

The story behind our logo

From small circles
to a bigger one.

The smaller circle

Our friends, our routines, the people we already know.

The overlap

What we find when we actually get to know each other, the things we have in common.

The bigger circle

The stronger community we're building around us.

Questions

Good to know.

Do I have to live in Richfield?

Not at all! We're based in Richfield, and women from all around the Twin Cities are welcome to join us.

Is it okay if I come alone?

Absolutely! During our first week, almost everyone came on their own, without knowing anyone else there. That's very normal here. Every walk brings new faces, so you won't be the only one.

Do I need to RSVP?

Yes, please RSVP on our Walks & Events page for each walk you plan to join. You'll get a reminder, plus a heads-up if plans or the weather change, and it helps me plan for everyone. If your plans change, please update your RSVP.

What if I can't stay the whole time?

That's completely fine. Walks run about 45–60 minutes at an easy pace. Come for part of it, or if you arrive a little late, you might still catch us on the trail.

What if it rains?

A little rain doesn't stop us. Bring a rain jacket or umbrella, and please check the event page before heading out. If the weather changes enough that we need to adjust, I'll message everyone who RSVP'd and post an update on the Facebook page.

Does it cost anything?

Walks are free. For coffee meetups and dinners, there's no fee to join, and each of us pays for our own food and drinks. If another gathering has a cost, you'll see it on the event page before you RSVP.

Can I bring a friend?

Please do, we love welcoming new faces! Just have her RSVP too. Bring a friend or come alone and get to KNOW someone new.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are welcome on most walks as long as they're on a short leash and well behaved. Please only bring your dog if they're calm around people and other dogs and won't jump, nip, or pull, even playfully.

Please be mindful that not everyone is comfortable around dogs, and be sure to pick up after them.

Dogs are not allowed at Wood Lake Nature Center in order to help protect the natural habitat, so please leave them at home for those walks, or for any walk at a park that doesn't allow dogs.

I'll include each park's dog rules on the event page whenever I can. If you're unsure, please check the park's rules before bringing your dog.
